Vinyl vs Wood Windows: Which is Ideal for Your Home?

replacement windows in Hercules, CA

The moment you decide to focus on replacement windows in Hercules, CA, you’ll discover that there are two basic kinds: wood and vinyl. There are numerous other styles and materials for windows and you can get them in just about any size or shape you want, but the two most common materials used are wood and vinyl.

Which is better? That’s really akin to asking someone what type of home they’d prefer: a colonial, ranch, split level, and so on. People have various tastes and preferences, so it’s impossible to truly tell someone what’s best for their home. However, we can denote some of the benefits of each and let you decide.

It’s best when the customer has the best information at their disposal so they can make the right decision for their family and budget.

The benefits of wood windows.

For years, all you would have found when it came to home construction were wood windows. These were the most popular style until a few decades ago when vinyl windows offered a cheaper alternative to wood windows.

Wood windows provide a more traditional look and feel within the home. When you have vinyl windows installed where you once had wood, you are going to notice the difference.

Wood has a unique appearance and you can also have your wood windows stained rather than painted, which could be highly beneficial for homes that have a rustic appearance.

Wood windows can also be sanded down and repainted if you don’t like the color, or you feel you want a change at some point in the future.

The benefits of vinyl windows.

Vinyl windows offer some better insulating qualities, which can help save money on utility bills throughout the year, especially with regard to heating and cooling your home. They are also a bit more durable over time, with an average life expectancy of 15 to 20 years.

They also tend to be lighter weight than wood windows, which can be beneficial for those individuals who would be opening and closing their windows on a regular basis.

Another advantage of vinyl windows is that if they get scratched, as can happen, the color is mixed throughout the material, so you won’t notice any issues with regard to color.

Durability considerations.

When it comes to durability of vinyl and wood windows, you’re going to hear a wide range of opinions. In reality, both types of windows will last for about the same amount of time. The most important aspect when it comes to durability is the construction and quality of the seals and seams that are used.

If you choose the cheapest windows on the market, you’re simply not going to get the kind of durability you may want or expect.

Color and renovation.

As we noted, when you want to change the color or style of your windows, for whatever reason, with vinyl windows you’ll be out of luck. With wood windows, they make renovation much easier.

Deciding between wood windows or vinyl windows really comes down to practicality for your home and family and how much you budget for them.

Three Reasons Replacement Windows Are the Right Decision for Your Family

Post time: 12:26 am
replacement windows in San Francisco, CA

You’re sitting around trying to figure out what projects are important to help improve the look, feel, comfort, or even value of your home. One thing that you may or may not have considered, but that can be incredibly important, are replacement windows.

Most people have a tendency to avoid replacement windows in San Francisco, CA as a major home improvement projects because they don’t see much value in it. They see the old, dirty, worn out windows, but they aren’t cracked, are opening and closing (for the most part), and performing their job.

While most people could probably say the same thing about all of the appliances in their old, outdated kitchen, this is one of the first home improvement projects people take on. Why? They see inherent value in it.

So let’s talk about the three key reasons why replacement windows might very well be an important decision for you and your family.

They help save money on utility bills.

While living in the San Francisco Bay area means that we don’t have to worry about frigid cold winters and exceptionally hot summers, it doesn’t mean we don’t heat and cool our homes.

Forty percent of the heat and cool air in your home is usually lost through draft, outdated windows and doors. Consider how much you spend on average per month on your utility bills (for heat and air conditioning) and then calculate 40 percent. That will give you an idea of just how much you could save when you choose the right replacement windows for your home.

Replacement windows improve the comfort of your home.

Many people have a tendency to keep their basic window treatments closed over their windows when they notice the condition of those particular windows are in poor shape. For example, maybe you purchased your home a few years ago and it was built in the 1970s. For all you know, it still has the original windows in it (because of the condition of those windows).

As a result, you keep the blinds closed so you don’t have to be reminded of how poor those windows are. If you’ve installed replacement windows (the right kind, of some quality), you’re going to be more inclined to throw open those curtains and blinds and that can make a world of difference for you and your family as far as comfort is concerned.

Open window treatments let sunlight in and that can add tremendous comfort for everyone in your family.

The right replacement windows can add value to your home.

Did you know there are about 5 different home improvement projects that can actually help to increase the value of your home? A kitchen renovation is one. Bathroom remodel is another. And yes, replacement windows are another. (Finishing a basement and replacing the roof are the two others).

Not only could you end up saving money on your utility bills every month with replacement windows, you could also boost the value of your home. Those are some pretty good reasons to consider replacement windows right now.

Spring Cleaning for your Windows

Post time: 6:55 pm
replacement windows in Berkley, CA

Spring is here in Berkley, CA and with it comes the urge to tidy things up and get ready for the warmer weather. One thing on your to-do list is probably to clean windows. All that build up from winter dirt and debris not only looks bad, but can also make windows difficult to operate. The last thing you want is permanent damage. So here are a few supplies you need along with steps to follow for cleaning your windows this spring.

Supplies for Window Cleaning

Here is what you need:

Sponge

Mild detergent

Dry towel

Generic glass cleaner

Lint free cloths

Plastic putty knife

Soft bristle brush

Silicone lubricant

Vacuum

Do not use:

Pressure washer

Razor blades

Abrasive cleaners

Solvents or nail polish remover

Cleaners with chlorine bleach

Furniture polish

Liquid grease removers

Step 1. Clean the Frame

Once you have assembled your supplies, remove the sashes and screens for easy access to all window surfaces. Use a sponge, warm water, and your mild detergent to wash the frames. Remove dirt and rinse with clean water. Do not let water pool in the frames. Use a towel to dry the area as quickly as possible.

Step 2. Clean the Glass

Next, get out your generic glass cleaner and your lint-free cloths. Spray cleaner directly on the glass and wipe away immediately. Again, do not let cleaner drip down the glass. It can pool inside the frame and cause problems down the road. Also, do not use metal scrapers or other abrasives for tough spots. These could damage the glass coatings. Instead, just spray the glass cleaner and use a soft bristle brush or plastic putty knife. Tip: for a streak-free clean, many professionals suggest using newspaper instead of cloth.

Step 3. Clean and Lube the Tracks

Use your vacuum to remove loose debris. Then, use a dry cloth to wipe down the tracks. If something is stuck in the track, try removing it with the plastic putty knife or the soft bristle brush. Once clear, lubricate the track with your silicone spray. But don’t spray directly on the track. Overspray could get on the frame or the glass and you will have to start all over. Instead, spray the lubricant onto the cloth, then wipe down the jamb liner and track.

Step 4. Clean the Screens

Once the rest of the window is clean, the last step is cleaning the screens. For this, you want to lay your screens out on a flat surface outside or prop them up in the shower. Be careful not to rip or damage the screens. Use the mild soap and the soft brush to remove tough dirt on both sides. Then rinse the screens with clear water and set them up to dry. Again, do not use a pressure washer or special nozzle on the hose. It could damage your window screens.

Signs You Need Replacement Windows

Post time: 6:49 pm
replacement windows in El Cerrito, CA

Because getting replacement windows in El Cerrito, CA is such a large investment, most homeowners put it off as long as possible. What they don’t realize are the hidden costs and dangers of old windows. There are a number of ways your windows will break down, but if you pay attention, you will know when the timing is right for replacement windows. For example, if your windows are:

Leaking

Feel a draft when you sit by a certain window? Notice condensation sandwiched between the two panes of glass? These are not good signs. Properly sealed windows should not have any air or water leaks when closed.

Difficult to Operate

How easy is it to open and close your windows? Do you have to “rig” them to stay open? You shouldn’t have to wrestle with your window sashes, but this is more than just a simple frustration. If you can’t get your windows open and closed easily, then they are a safety hazard—especially during an emergency.

Poor Insulators

One of the hidden costs of old windows is energy loss. You already spend a lot of money keeping your El Cerrito, CA home comfortable. Don’t let those funds fly out the window! With modern manufacturing, replacement windows are more energy efficient than ever before. They will keep your home cool in summer, warm in winter, and even block harmful UV rays.

Dangerous

Old windows were not produced with safety glass. Not only are they more likely to break, but they also shatter into dangerous shards that can cause major damage to people and property.

Hard to Clean and Maintain

Maintenance, especially on old wood frames, is another hidden cost. How long can you afford to keep sanding and refinishing those frames? And how many more times are you going to risk your neck climbing up a rickety ladder to clean the glass? You can get new windows that require little to no maintenance that also have special features that make cleaning a breeze.

Noisy

This isn’t something homeowners often think about, but new windows can insulate against more than just heat. They can also cut down on unwanted noise. If you live by an airport or busy street in El Cerrito, CA with a lot of noise, you might want to think about replacement windows.

Not Secure

Broken latches and locks are another major concern. You do not want to give any intruders easy access to your home! You want locks and latches that work and are built to last.

Drab

Wear and tear is bound to happen over time and your windows will start to break down. They might warp, rust, crack, break, or chip. Nothing ruins the curb appeal of a home like damaged, worn out windows.

Frame Types for New Windows

Post time: 6:40 pm
Replacement windows in Richmond, CA

Replacement windows in Richmond, CA will improve your home, by increasing energy efficiency, making it feel more comfortable and updating the style. There are several sizes, shapes, and styles of new windows to choose from. However, the first consideration should be the frame material. This will be the basis for every other decision you make. Here is what you need to know to get started:

Aluminum Windows

Modern aluminum windows are far better than the old styles of the 70’s and 80’s. These window frames are light, but still strong and durable. They do not require a lot of maintenance and come in a resilient finish that is anodized or factory-baked. This material is also easily manipulated, making it especially good for windows with unusual shapes. The leading disadvantage is that it does not have as much thermal resistance. It does not work well in excessively hot or cold climates.

Vinyl Windows

This is another window material that has come leaps and bounds. Today, construction grade vinyl will hold up against almost any climate. Once installed, these windows do not need maintenance… only a little bit of cleaning every season. They have exceptional thermal resistance, boosting your energy efficiency. Also, because of the frame design and welded seams, these windows do not have any moisture or air leaks. The will not warp, fade, or chip and are impervious to pests. They are also one of the most affordable options on the market. But with that comes limited color options, and less versatility.

Wood Windows

A classic for a reason, nothing matches the aesthetic style of real wood windows. They have a warm, classic look that will bring a traditional feel to any home. These windows are also excellent thermal insulators. The windows are easy to install and require basic tools and carpentry skills and the material is even eco-friendly. But while wood windows will not rust, they are susceptible to pests, warping, weather damage, and rot. You will also need to sand and refinish the material every few years to keep it looking like new.

Fiberglass Windows

These windows are often considered the most stable. They offer the strength of aluminum frames and the insulation of vinyl. Also, because the material shares the properties of glass, the frames are dimensionally stable. This means the frame expands and contracts at the same rate as the glass panes, which keeps the seals tight and leak-free. Fiberglass is on the pricey side, but the upfront cost will more than pay for itself because of the energy savings and longevity these windows provide.

Composite Windows

Many homeowners who want the look of solid wood, but greater durability find the best of both words in composite window frames. These windows frames are made up of composite wood products, but have the same profile as solid wood. They are more stable and have better structural and thermal properties. They are also more resistant to decay and moisture. The only downside is that they are more expensive.
