The type of window and the installation method used depends on the problem that is being overcome and the construction characteristics of the house. The following problem areas are presented and explained to help you understand the various directions your new window installations might take.
LEAKING
Improperly installed window - with flashing: The flashing has not been installed properly or has been compromised.
Improperly installed retrofit window - Caulking is defective.
PROBABLE CAUSES
  • Problem other than the window, i.e. roof or siding.
  • Improperly Installed New Construction or Nail-on Window: The flashing is damaged or has been improperly installed.
  • Old defective window – weatherstripping worn, or putty needs repaired, or the mechanical joint corners have failed.
  • Improperly Installed Retrofit Windows - The caulking has failed or has been applied incorrectly.
SOLUTIONS (if window)
  • Replace the window with a nail-on type installation.
  • If caulking, pull the window and re-install with better caulk job.
  • Repair the window (i.e. replace weatherstripping).
