The type of window and the installation method used depends on the problem that is being overcome and the construction characteristics of the house.  The following problem areas are presented and explained to help you understand the various directions your new window installations might take.
SECURITY Some window styles are more secure than others.  3 areas are worth noting:

3 CONSIDERATIONS:

Primary locks on windows and doors.

  1. Windows - most locks on the newer windows are improved over the locks of older aluminum windows.

  2. Patio doors - many patio doors now have multipoint locking mechanics (2 or more points locking) instead of the single-point lock of older patio doors.

GLASS

By the simple fact that dual-pane glass has 2 pieces of glass instead of 1 you have more safety. In addition, there are different types of glass that you can install that makes it harder to bust the glass. In order of increased security they are:

  1. Thickness of glass

  2. Tempered Glass

  3. Laminated Glass

  4. Plexiglass or Lexon

Screens and ventilating locks are not designed for and should never be relied upon for security.

NOT ALL WINDOW STYLES HAVE VENTILATING LOCKS.

PATIO DOORS: Security in patio doors can be improved in two areas
  1. Multi-locking mechanisms

  2. Secondary locks
